In A Day With... Amaya Gomi

Firstly, are you able to tell us a little about you and your journey to where you are now; where is your hometown, where are you living at the moment and what do you do ?

Well, I was born and raised in Biarritz—aka the French version of Malibu, but with more baguettes and less Botox. Since January 2025, I’m officially Paris-based for work. It’s giving "Emily in Paris" but with a baby, a Google calendar packed to death, and a lot more caffeine. I’m an art director for a production company and the proud co-founder of the Queen Classic Surf Festival, a.k.a. the coolest, most inclusive surf event shaking up the dusty gender norms of the surf world since 2021 (more on it here). Women, LGBTQ+ folks, everyone’s welcome—just bring sunscreen and good vibes.

Amaya’s Mother

Baby Amaya

Old school Biarritz, baby!

How do you usually start your day?

Bobbie, my 2-year-old alarm clock, goes off at 7 a.m. sharp. Then it’s a sacred ritual of Peppa Pig, toast negotiations, one eye open trying to meditate while holding coffee like it’s a lifeline. Around 8:30, I drop her at school, whispering affirmations to myself like you got this, while simultaneously wondering if I remembered to put on deodorant. (Spoiler: sometimes I don’t.) Then maybe a vague nerve exercise if I’m feeling that girl energy. Definitely too much coffee. No regrets.

What does your dream day look like ?

Honestly? Biarritz, baby. Drop Bobbie at school, run to the beach, dive into the ocean like a sea witch reclaiming her powers. Read something totally impractical like a novel with zero plot, surf if the waves are serving, lunch barefoot with my ride-or-die friends, take a beach nap like an off-duty influencer, then another surf. My partner picks up Bobbie and we meet at the beach for a sunset dip. Maybe a little rosé if the universe is feeling generous.

What is your beauty routine ? Any favourite natural products or skincare rituals ?

Beauty routine? I barely had a “wash-my-face” routine pre-mom life. I was that French cliché: sunscreen, hair oil, vibes. But motherhood hit and suddenly I’m out here like a Gwyneth Paltrow starter pack. I swear by La Roche-Posay Baume B5, a glowy serum from my friend Anne’s brand Alaena (shout out Biarritz again), and I own a Gua Sha I use like a confused ancient goddess. Do I use it correctly? Absolutely not. But I feel like I do and that’s half the battle.

Do you have a favourite scent ? If so, where does it take you ?

Lemongrass. One whiff and I’m 10 years old again, jet-lagged in Bali with my family, smelling like mosquito repellent and wanderlust. It’s nostalgia in a bottle.

Are there any food or health philosophies that guide how you and your family eat ?

Health philosophy? Is cheese a philosophy? Because we’re more “fromage & fries” than “smoothie bowls & spirulina.” But we’re also marché people, très français. Organic, local, fresh—until we’re too lazy and order McDo. Our surf crew lives by a simple rule: surf hard, snack harder. Don’t trust a surfer who’s never craved a burger post-session. That’s not wellness, that’s witchcraft.

What was the transition into motherhood like for you? Anything you wish someone had told you?

Oh honey, buckle up. It was HARD. Like “who even am I?” hard. I had postpartum depression, lost all my favorite parts of me—surfing, spontaneity, me-ness. Instagram moms made it look like a Chanel ad, meanwhile I was crying into cold coffee in mismatched socks. But I got help. Therapy 2.0, Headspace app, antidepressants, journaling (the kind where you curse a lot), running (yes, I became that person). I ran a half marathon, went back to work, started to feel like me again. But stronger, wiser, softer. Motherhood broke me open in the best way. Now I’m planning the future—hers and mine—with clarity and big-ass love.

When do you feel your most confident, beautiful and happy ?

When I’m surfing. Hair like seaweed, body salty, soul lit. That’s my runway. That’s where I strut.

On days where you are feeling overwhelmed, uninspired, down or just tired, how do you come back to yourself ?

Panic! Just kidding. I put on my sneakers and run it out. Or I walk with a podcast in my ears pretending I’m in a movie montage. Sometimes I just read something dreamy and completely unrelated to my life, like a fantasy novel or a Francoise Sagan book, my comfy zone.

Are there any old-school natural remedies that you swear by ?

Honestly, no witchy tricks here. But I do not travel without Avène Cicalfate. That stuff could fix a broken heart.

If there was one piece of advice that you could teach your little one, what would it be ?

Be yourself—loud, shiny, too much, whatever. The world needs more “too much” women.

What are you looking forward to over the next few months/this year ?

The 5th edition of the Queen Classic Surf Festival. It’s going to be legendary. Think surfboards, Surf contest, DragQueens, empowerment podcast radio with amazing guests, 90’s Dj set on the beach…

If you were to choose 5 ingredients to have in your kitchen ?

Olive oil, parmesan, bread (duh), avocados, and dark chocolate. Basically, everything I’d take to a deserted island with Wi-Fi.

And lastly, can you leave us with a favourite recipe of yours ?

Our house special: pasta with cream, real Italian ham, and parmigiano. Toddler approved, husband inhaled it, and I pretend it’s a “balanced meal” because there's a leaf of basil on top. Voilà.
